Oakham is an attractive market town with an octagonal Butter Cross near the Market Place. Markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Oakham Bus Station in John Street is ¼ mile from the railway station.
The Castle grounds and Great Hall are open for visiting. The Great Hall is a fine example of Norman domestic
architecture and it contains an unusual collection of ornate ceremonial horseshoes donated by Peers of the Realm.
