As you cross the River Don you can see the 18th century Jarrow Bridge which once carried the main road. Note that Bede Metro station is nearer to these attractions than Jarrow Metro station.
The ruins of St Paul's Monastery dating from medieval times are behind St Paul's Church.
An earlier 7th century Anglo-Saxon monastery on the site was the home of the Venerable Bede, chronicler of early
English Christianity. Part of the church Bede knew survives as the chancel of St Paul's Church. Admission free.
