Darlington is a large market town on the River Skerne proudly famous for its railway heritage. On the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 Locomotion No. 1 became the first steam locomotive to haul a passenger train on a public railway.

Barnard Castle by bus

Barnard Castle is an attractive market town on the River Tees, it is named after its castle. There are many historic buildings including the octagonal Buttermarket.
Bus X75/X76 from Town Hall (½ mile from station) to Barnard Castle, about 40 minutes journey. M-S ½-hourly, Sun & BH every 2 hours. Return buses from the arrival stop. Operated by Arriva.

The ruins of an imposing 12th century fortress standing high above the River Tees on the edge of the town. Light refreshments and picnic area.

The Bowes Museum by bus

Outstanding collections of art, fashion and design housed in a French château style building set in gardens and landscaped parkland. A highlight is an 18th century silver swan automaton demonstrated daily (see website for times). The museum was founded by Joséphine Bowes and her husband John. Woodland walks and play area. Café and picnic area.

Richmond (Yorkshire) by bus
