Thatcham station is close to the Kennet & Avon Canal which is near the railway for much of the way between Reading and Pewsey.

Nature Discovery Centre and Thatcham Reedbeds Reserve 1¾ miles

Displays in the Nature Discovery Centre highlight wildlife to be seen in the surrounding nature reserve; birds, dragonflies, damselflies and other wetland wildlife. Habitats include internationally important reedbeds, lakes, woodland and hedgerows. Walking trails around the Reserve. Adventure playground. Events programme. Café and picnic area. Admission free but there may be charges for events.

Greenham & Crookham Commons 1¼ miles

A large area of open heathland with heather, gorse, grassland wildflowers, birds, butterflies and other wildlife. After many years of military use the Commons were reopened to the public in 2000. Please keep to paths to avoid disturbing ground-nesting birds.

Bowdon Woods Nature Reserve 2 miles

Dense ancient woodland with streams and clearings, plus younger woodland which has colonised a former ammunitions depot. Birds, butterflies, wildflowers, fungi, lichens and mosses. Waymarked walks. Views across the Kennet Valley. Some steps and steep paths which may be muddy. Seasonal guided walks.
