Letchworth, the first Garden City, was built in 1903 to prove that Ebenezer Howard's ideas for well-planned 'Garden Cities' were practical. Howard was apalled at the very unpleasant living and working conditions in many late 19th-century towns and cities so he proposed a Garden City as a pleasant environment in which to live, work and follow leisure pursuits.
