Hitchin is a market town with narrow streets and historic buildings around the Market Place. The town centre is ¾ mile from the station.
The museum shows elementary education in Britain from 1798. Buildings include a Lancasterian School-room of 1837
where one master taught 330 boys and Edwardian classrooms of 1905 with desks, teaching aids and children's work.
