Hertford is an important market town on the River Lea. Little remains of its Norman castle but there is a Tudor gatehouse in the Castle
Gardens public park. A Heritage Trail is available from the Tourist Information Centre and Hertford Town council website:

Hertford East station is near the town centre and 1 mile from Hertford North. Hertford North station is ¾ mile from the town centre and frequent buses to the Bus Station conveniently stop at the Tourist Information Centre opposite Hertford Theatre. This journey is covered by Hertford PlusBus which is valid for local bus journeys including to Ware.

King's Meads Nature Reserve is a large area of watermeadows beside the River Lea between Hertford and
Ware. It supports a variety of wildlife, particularly dragonflies and damselflies.
In summer there are many wildflowers beside the trails and warblers can be heard. Admission free.
